Why the jawline
The nose does not determine the profile on its own. A chin that sits back makes the nose look larger than it is, which is why assessing the jawline is worthwhile in patients considering rhinoplasty.
With age, bone support along the jawline decreases and the outline blurs. Filler replaces part of that lost support.

In patients with marked laxity and excess skin, filler will not give the result they want and can make the appearance heavier. Where the jaw is significantly retruded, orthognathic surgery may be the answer, and a referral is made in that case.
How it is performed
Hyaluronic acid fillers formulated for the jaw area, with higher supporting strength, are generally used. Injections are placed at planned points on the chin, the jaw angle and along the line.
Important vessels and nerves run through this region, so it matters that the treatment is given by a doctor who knows the anatomy and who decides between cannula and needle technique on that basis.
Risks
Swelling, bruising and tenderness are common and settle within a few days. If asymmetry develops it can be corrected at review.
A rarer but serious risk is filler entering or compressing a vessel, which can compromise blood supply to the tissue. Hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved with hyaluronidase, and that enzyme should be available during treatment.
Recovery
- First 24 hours Swelling is at its most obvious. Do not massage the area or sleep face down.
- Days 3 to 7 Swelling and any bruising resolve and the line begins to show.
- Weeks 2 to 4 The result settles. A small adjustment can be made at review.
- Months 12 to 18 The effect fades. Treatment is repeated if you wish to continue.
These are average times; recovery varies from person to person.

Will my face look more masculine?
Planning is individual. Defining the jaw angle and bringing the chin forward produce different results, and how much of each is done is discussed at the consultation.
What if I do not like it?
Hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved with hyaluronidase.
Can it be planned together with rhinoplasty?
Assessing them together makes sense for profile balance. Whether they are done in the same session is a separate decision, discussed at the examination.
Is it painful?
Topical anaesthetic cream is used beforehand and most fillers contain a local anaesthetic. Patients generally describe a sensation of pressure.
